The most famous anecdote from the life of Saint Nicholas is those of a poor man with three daughters. The father couldn’t afford to provide his daughters with dowries, meaning that the girls were unlikely to get married and were destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, three bags of gold appeared in the poor man’s home, providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings left infront of the fire to dry. This was the beggining of the custom of children hanging stockings on the mantlepiece, waiting for the gifts from Saint Nicholas.
In Europe, St. Nicholas’ feast day, celebrated on December 6th, keeps the stories of the saint’s goodness and generosity alive, mostly by parents leaving out little gifts for their kids.
